Isabella Benshimol Toro is a multidisciplinary artist who lives and works in London. Through sculpture, installation and video-based work, Benshimol examines the limits and constraints of the body as a site beyond language and conscious control, exploring notions of materiality, imprisonment, permeability and the unconscious. Her fabric and resin sculptures resemble discarded pieces of clothing, frozen in slick, tactile pools left permanently moulded around the shape of the body.
Benshimol received an MFA from Goldsmiths College, London in 2020 and a BA in Visual Arts at Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti, Milan in 2016. Recent group exhibitions include London Grads Now, Saatchi Gallery, London (2020); Heterotopia at Oen Gallery, Kavelvåg (2020); Un gesto que permanece, Salón, Madrid (2020); Long Live The New Flesh, The Biscuit Factory, London (2019); and Mater Matter, Via San Primo 4, Milan (2019). In 2017, Benshimol was an artist-in-residence at the School of Visual Arts, New York.
